Halloween is celebrated on the 31th October and it is a celebration which is the most popular in The USA, Ireland and Great Britain. However, the customs connected with celebrating Halloween are also known in other countries. The main idea of this celebration is the contact with the world of ghosts, the dead and demons.
Let's start from the main symbol of Halloween, which is a pumpkin. It is a carved and illuminated from the inside pumpkin with jagged teeth. Even though carved pumpkins are very popular in the west of Europe, they also become more and more popular in Poland. Preparing this funny and scary pumpkin is great fun both for children and adults. We do not need special abilities to make a Halloween pumpkin. However, what we need is a lot of time. Lanterns, made from pumpkin and shining in the evening or at night, create a magic and unique atmosphere. It is good to remember that the windows or gardens decorated with pumpkins can mean that we are ready for giving sweets to the children.
What is more, another popular symbol of this celebration is the trick-or-treating tradition. This day children wear funny costumes and go from house to house in search of sweets and chocolate bars. Children ask the owners of the houses for sweets saying "trick or treat". When the owners of the house have not got anything for the children, the children may perform a trick on the owners of this house. In order to surprise our young guests in positive way, we can prepare self-made pumpkin clutch bags with sweets inside. We just need a needle with threads, orange felt, small pieces of black and white felt and embroidery floss. Self-made bags will be certainly much more original than a basket of sweets and will make children smile.
How to decorate our house or flat for Halloween? It often happens that the preparations before this celebration give us much more joy than celebrating Halloween itself. The fact that our house or flat starts looking like a house from a different planet, does not bother us. We can always use simple and classical decorations. However, for those who are more ambitious we are able to give some suggestions connected with preparing our house or flat for Halloween. If we are fans of horrors, we can change our house into a haunted house. In this case, Dracula seems to be a good inspiration. Skulls, vampires or spiders may help us create our own style. Classical pillows with felt elements such as witches or black cats sewn on the pillows can be interesting solutions. Vivid colours reflect the atmosphere of Halloween perfectly. Moreover, black and white also go well with this kind of celebration. Black figures in windows cause that we will obtain a terrifying effect. What is more, candles help in creating the creepy atmosphere.
