Stone by stone, dragged to the construction site of the Santa Maria del Mar church, are like the successive days and years of the main protagonist, Arnau Estanyol.
A story that begins with Arnau's escape with his father to Barcelona, 14th-century Barcelona, full of brutality, but also offering hope of breaking free from his status (i.e., being a peasant) and achieving something more.
While reading these over 700 pages, we accompany our hero through his entire life, all his ups and downs.
We also accompany the second important protagonist of this novel, which is medieval Barcelona, with its multitude of magical streets, buildings, and historical accuracy.
For me, it's one of the books that inspired me to visit Barcelona and go to the Santa Maria del Mar church to feel "that atmosphere."

A beautifully told story of the lives of two adopted brothers, fictional characters, set against authentic historical events, the development of a magnificent city, and the construction of the cathedral in Barcelona. Reading it was a great adventure and pleasure.
