Take away everything else in a bedroom — the nightstands, the rug, the lamp you keep meaning to replace — and one piece still tells you almost everything about the room's character: what's standing behind the pillows. A headboard is the closest thing a bedroom has to a backdrop, the surface your eye lands on every single morning before it lands on anything else. Get it right, and the whole room feels finished even on the days the bed isn't perfectly made.

There was a time when the TV unit was basically a piece of furniture-sized negotiation. A CRT set the size of a small fridge, a tangle of scart leads behind it, a shelf groaning under the weight of a VHS collection, and — if the household was really keeping up with the times — a chunky silver DVD player blinking 00:00 because nobody had reset the clock since the last power cut. Friday nights meant a trip to Blockbuster and a rented tape balanced on top; Thursday nights meant the whole family arranged around it for "must-see TV." The television unit wasn't just storage. It was the stage for the whole ritual.

Every sitcom bedroom has one. That slightly too-full chest of drawers standing against the wall, usually with a lamp on top and a mirror leaning against it, quietly holding everything the script never mentions — the character's whole offscreen life folded into six drawers. And in real homes, it works exactly the same way: no piece of furniture absorbs more of the ordinary chaos of daily life, and does it with less credit, than the humble chest of drawers.
