The most durable upholstery fabrics are densely woven fabrics, synthetic chenilles, modern velours and microfibre. They withstand heavy use, wear, stretching and minor damage. Many of them are given additional coatings that make cleaning easier and reduce staining and the build-up of pet hair. The Martindale test is also a good indicator of durability, with a result of over 50,000 cycles meaning the material is highly resistant.

Popular upholstery materials include woven fabrics with a visible weave, soft velours with a pleasant surface and chenilles, which stand out for their thicker, plush texture.

Modern velour protected with a water-repellent coating works brilliantly on a sofa. It is pleasant to the touch, durable and easy to care for, and its tight structure stops pet hair from embedding and reduces the risk of snagged threads.

Current upholstery fabric trends focus on bouclé with its soft, looped texture, timeless velour and velvet, and corduroy with a retro feel. Materials with a pronounced texture, a three-dimensional weave and warm, earthy colours are particularly fashionable.

Velour has an elegant, smooth surface with a slight sheen, but touch marks can easily appear on it. Chenille stands out for its soft, plush texture, which makes a room feel cosy and hides signs of use well. Velour is better for more elegant interiors, and chenille for rooms where comfort and practicality count.

An upholstery fabric’s abrasion resistance shows how well it copes with friction and heavy use. This parameter is assessed with the Martindale test, during which the material is rubbed repeatedly under constant pressure. A higher number of cycles means a more durable fabric and longer-lasting upholstery.

Chenille is a durable, soft material with a plush texture that is pleasant to the touch. It is made from characteristic fuzzy yarns that give the fabric an elegant look and a subtle sheen.

The optimum weight for sofa upholstery fabric is around 300–500 g/m². Fabrics in this range are usually sturdy, suitably thick and perform well in everyday use. Their durability depends not only on weight, however, but also on a tight weave and high abrasion resistance.

The symbol 100% PES indicates that the material is made exclusively of polyester. The label “PES” is used for polyester fibres, a synthetic raw material made from polymers.

When buying a corner sofa, consider its size, right- or left-hand layout and the type of seat filling, e.g. HR foam or springs. The upholstery material also matters a great deal, especially in a home with children or pets. If the sofa will double as a bed, it is also worth checking its comfort and how the bed mechanism works.

Corner sofa colours are currently dominated by warm, natural shades such as beige, cream, caramel and brown, as well as bolder shades of green, navy and burgundy. Classic cool grey is gradually giving way to tones that give a room a cosier, more elegant feel.

Sofas in darker and medium greys, graphite and mélange fabrics hide dirt best. Brown, dark beige, navy and bottle green are also practical, as they conceal dust, pet hair, small stains and signs of everyday use well.

In the colour fastness to rubbing test, the fabric was rated 4–5 dry and 5 wet. These results indicate very good colour durability during everyday contact and rubbing.

Light fastness is 5. This is a very good result in terms of colour durability. The shade itself may look slightly different in daylight and artificial light, however, so a sample lets you check the colour right where the furniture is going to stand.

Miscanto has a weight of 430 g/m² with a tolerance of ±5%. This value indicates the mass of one square metre of material and makes it easier to compare fabrics of different construction. Combined with the chenille texture, it helps you better understand the character of the material before choosing upholstery.

Miscanto combines a chenille texture with abrasion resistance of 70,000 cycles, high pilling resistance and very good results for colour fastness to rubbing and light. The fabric is also flame-retardant, another parameter worth considering when comparing materials.
