How to clean a mattress? Home remedies for stains, dust mites and unpleasant odours

A mattress sees more than any other piece of furniture in the house – sweat from hot nights, morning coffee drunk in bed, cat hair from a feline that stubbornly chooses the same napping spot. The problem is that while we change bedding regularly, it's easy to forget about the mattress itself – until the day we notice a stain or feel that something in the bedroom smells different than it should.

The good news is that regular, simple mattress care doesn't require specialised equipment or expensive products – just a few proven home remedies, used with appropriate regularity. In this guide, we show you how to clean a mattress step by step, how to deal with specific stains, how to get rid of dust mites and unpleasant odours, and how often to care for your mattress to make it last as long as possible.

How to clean a mattress step by step – regular care and airing?

The basis of mattress care is regularity, not emergency actions every few years. The simplest and most effective habit is weekly vacuuming of the mattress surface with a soft attachment – this removes dust, dead skin cells and fine dirt that over time settles deep into the fabric fibres and foam.

Regular airing is equally important. After removing the bedding, it's worth leaving the mattress uncovered for a few hours, preferably with an open window – moisture that naturally accumulates in the mattress during sleep needs to evaporate, otherwise it promotes the development of dust mites and unpleasant odours. A good habit is to do this at least once a week, for example on laundry day.

For regular mattress refreshing, the dry method using baking soda also works well – spread in a thin layer over the entire surface, left for a few hours (preferably overnight), and then thoroughly vacuumed, it effectively neutralises odours and absorbs excess moisture. It's a simple, inexpensive method that should be incorporated into your regular care routine, regardless of whether any stain is currently visible.

It's also worth remembering about the bedding itself and the mattress protector – a regularly washed, waterproof cover is the simplest form of prevention, significantly limiting the mattress's contact with sweat, dust and accidental spills.

How to clean mattress stains – urine, blood, coffee and other dirt?

Each type of stain requires a slightly different approach, and reaction time is crucial – the sooner you deal with fresh dirt, the greater the chance it will disappear without a trace.

Urine stains. First, gently blot up excess liquid with clean paper towels, pressing them onto the mattress instead of rubbing. Then, prepare a solution of water, white vinegar, and a small amount of dish soap, apply it to the stain and leave for 10–15 minutes, then wipe with a clean, damp cloth. Finally, sprinkle baking soda on the spot, let it dry, and vacuum thoroughly – the soda will further neutralise the smell.

Blood stains. Cold water is key here – hot water sets the protein in the blood, making the stain harder to remove. For fresh stains, wash with cold water mixed with a small amount of salt or dish soap, gently applied with a soft cloth. For dried stains, a paste of baking soda and cold water, applied for about fifteen minutes before rinsing, is helpful.

Coffee and tea stains. Blot up excess liquid with a towel, then clean the stain with a 2:1 solution of water and white vinegar, applied with a soft brush. After drying, it's worth refreshing the spot further with baking soda.

Grease stains. Sprinkle fresh dirt with potato starch or baking soda and leave for 15–20 minutes to absorb the grease, then vacuum and clean the residue with water and a mild detergent.

Regardless of the type of stain, avoid saturating the mattress with a lot of water – excess moisture penetrates deep into the filling and takes a very long time to dry, which promotes mould growth. It's better to use small amounts of liquid and thoroughly dry the mattress after each cleaning step.

How to get rid of dust mites and odour from a mattress using home remedies?

House dust mites are microscopic organisms that naturally inhabit mattresses, feeding on shed skin – they cannot be completely eliminated, but their number and associated allergens can be significantly reduced.

The most effective, entirely home-based method is regular vacuuming combined with airing and sun exposure – UV rays and low air humidity are naturally unfavourable for dust mites. If you have the possibility, take your mattress out onto a balcony or terrace for a few hours on a sunny day.

Baking soda proves to be a natural ally once again – in addition to neutralising odours, it also helps to dry out the mattress environment, which is where dust mites thrive best, i.e., damp and warm. Some people enhance the soda with a few drops of essential oil with antibacterial properties, such as lavender or tea tree oil – this also has a refreshing effect, although it's worth checking the fabric's reaction on a small, inconspicuous area first.

It's also worth remembering that temperature matters – washing bedding at a minimum of 60°C effectively eliminates dust mites residing in fabrics that are in direct contact with the mattress, which indirectly also limits their population on the mattress itself.

How often to clean and rotate your mattress to make it last longer?

Regularity in mattress care directly translates into its lifespan, so it's worth adopting a few consistent habits instead of only cleaning the mattress when a visible problem arises.

Weekly vacuuming and airing are fundamental, and should be treated as a routine, just like changing bedding. Deeper cleaning with baking soda works well once a month or every two months, and a more thorough inspection for stains and odours – during seasonal changes, when we usually air the bedroom more intensely.

Equally important is rotating and flipping the mattress, if its construction allows for it – check the manufacturer's instructions to see if your model is double-sided. Regularly rotating the mattress every 3–6 months prevents uneven wear in areas that are most frequently stressed, extending its lifespan and maintaining consistent sleep comfort for years.

It's also worth remembering that even the best-maintained mattress has a lifespan – usually 8–10 years, depending on the material and intensity of use. If, despite regular care, you notice that the mattress is clearly losing its resilience or no longer provides the same comfort as before, it's a sign that you should consider replacing it.
