The Winter Soldier - a ruthless assassin, working for the Soviets for over half a century, has returned and encounters Captain America on his path.

One of those comic books whose atmosphere harks back to the best times of action and spy stories. It features many flashbacks to wartime, intertwined with contemporary events.

Who the Winter Soldier is, what his origin is, and why his fate seems inextricably linked with Captain America – all this in the first of nine volumes of one of Ed Brubaker's best series.

I didn't plan to read more than the first volume, but I ended up buying the entire series. Brubaker turned Captain America into a hero whose story truly engages, and the plot gets more interesting with each volume. A great combination of action, espionage, and emotion.

This is not a typical superhero comic. The dense spy intrigue, excellent pacing, and very well-portrayed conflict between duty and friendship make it hard to put down. An ideal entry point into the world of Captain America.

I was never a fan of Captain America, but this story completely changed my mind. Instead of a colorful superhero adventure, I got a mature political-spy thriller with distinct characters and a great atmosphere. One of the best Marvel stories I've read.
